Columbus, Ohio: Today, a bill advocating for a legal pathway for assisted suicide was introduced in the Ohio House of Representatives. This radical legislation opens Pandora’s box for health care industries to profit off of suicidal deaths in Ohio.

“It can be difficult to sort out truth from fiction with legislation such as this. Ohioans know that in truth, countless patients who think they want to die by suicide actually fear loss of autonomy and being a burden to their family,” said Carrie Snyder, Executive Director of Ohio Right to Life.

“Further, only 3% of Oregon patients were referred for psychiatric evaluation to screen for depression, and in Colorado, two women in their 30s were given suicide poison for anorexia, which is a treatable mental health condition and not a terminal illness,” said Snyder.

The suicide rate of the entire population increases when suicide is validated and legalized. People with disabilities fear coercion to head down this pathway, and insurance companies have denied lifesaving treatment while offering to provide cheap lethal drugs instead.

“We need look no further than the Canadian experiment, where in just 10 years, over 100,000 people have died at the hands of doctors, and now even children and people who struggle with mental illness are in their crosshairs,” mentioned Snyder. “Ohio needs to protect vulnerable citizens, not encourage their suicide.”
