COLUMBUS, Ohio— Today, Ohio Right to Life released a statement regarding the United States Supreme Court decision in the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. In the decision, the majority opinion on the court decided to officially overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey and return the issue of abortion back to individual states. The decision comes out after a draft of the opinion was leaked to Politico in an unprecedented fashion on May 2nd.
The justices that ruled in favor of the majority were Chief Justice John Roberts, Justices Samuel Alito, Clearance Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.
The following statement can be attributed to President of Ohio Right to Life Michael Gonidakis:
“When I originally began my work here at Ohio Right to Life 14 years ago, the idea of Roe being overturned in my lifetime seemed completely out of reach. Today’s Dobbs decision by the Supreme Court finally reverses the most destructive court decision in our nation’s history that is responsible for over 62 million deaths.
“Ohio now can save countless innocent lives. Ohio Right to Life encourages our pro-life legislative majorities and Governor DeWine to be ambitious and end abortion once and for all in our great state. We are dedicated and prepared to pass our Human Life Protection Act and send it to Governor DeWine’s desk as soon as possible
“While we should pause to reflect and give thanks for this life affirming decision, we must also recognize that our work is far from over. We will continue to labor every day until all life—from conception until natural death—is protected under Ohio law. All Ohioans must work together to help women in need to ensure they have access to the best health care and support services so that they can have a healthy pregnancy and raise their child to fulfill their God given purpose.”
The following statement can be attributed to Executive Director of Ohio Right to Life Peter Range:
“For 49 years in our nation, the preborn in every state have been denied the fundamental right to life because of the heartbreaking decision of Roe v. Wade. Today, we joyfully celebrate the announcement of the good news from the Supreme Court that Roe was indeed wrongly and woefully decided. We in the pro-life movement vow to continue to fight for the preborn in each and every state, including here in Ohio, so that every child conceived might enjoy the right to life.
“As we continue to advocate for the preborn, we will also continue to walk alongside, as we always have, every mother and father facing an unexpected pregnancy. While some children are unexpected, no child is unwanted and through our vast array of pregnancy centers, social services agencies and churches, the pro-life faithful are committed to building the culture of life in this next phase of our movement. It is now time, as it is written in the book of Isaiah, chapter 61, ‘To bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and… to comfort all who mourn.’”
