Dr. Ashley K. Fernandes
Ashley K. Fernandes, MD, PhD, is a practicing pediatric physician and bioethicist in the Columbus area. He received an MA in Philosophy from Johns Hopkins University in 1999; an MD from The Ohio State University in 2003; and a PhD in Philosophy from Georgetown University in 2008. Dr. Fernandes is board certified in General Pediatrics. Focusing on bioethics and professionalism education scholarship (where he is a national thought leader), he practices pediatrics in the outpatient setting working with underserved and diverse populations. He has published scores of articles in peer-reviewed journals and invited book chapters.
Dr. Fernandes is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, an elected member (2016-2023) of the AAP’s Executive Committee on Bioethics, a member of the AOA Medical Honor Society, and a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society, receiving the prestigious Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine award twice—in 2010 and 2020, a rare accomplishment. Dr. Fernandes has been a member and leader of the Catholic Medical Association since medical school, which awarded him the National Mentor of the Year Award in 2015. He has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including Professor of the Year at 2 different medical schools. In 2022, he was awarded the Master Teacher Award by the Courage to Teach Society.
